Karlowsky Fashion – A success story for 5 generations
For generations, the name ‘Karlowsky’ has stood for high-quality branded clothing in the catering and hotel industries – and for several years now also in the medical, care, cosmetics and wellness sectors. With Thomas & Niels Karlowsky, the fourth and fifth generations are now responsible for the fortunes of the family business.
The success story of the workwear expert began in 1892 with great-great-great-grandfather August Karlowsky, who laid the foundation for the family business. He traded in selected haberdashery goods and initially still travelled from market to market with a wooden cart. From 1936, his son Herrmann and his wife Frida took the business a decisive step forward. Our former retail shop developed into a wholesale business with several branches, whose goods were produced in the company's own factories. After the war, private property was expropriated in the GDR. Frieda Karlowsky was able to negotiate a commission contract with the state (half state, half private), so that the company could at least partly remain in family hands.
After Frieda's death, the family inheritance initially passed to the two daughters before Thomas, just 14 years old, became the fourth generation to take over the family inheritance in 1974. He initially managed the company until 1989, before becoming managing director in 1990 and realigning the company. A growing product range, a growing customer base, a growing importance – the 1990s and 2000s were characterised by expansion, innovation and many landmark decisions that have made Karlowsky one of the most important producers of workwear for the catering and hotel industry in Germany.
Since 2014, the fifth Karlowsky generation has also been on board: Niels initially managed the Business Development, Export, IT and Marketing departments before joining the management team in 2023. Since then, Thomas & Niels Karlowsky have been co-heads of the company, using their passion, shared expertise and innovative ideas to ensure that the company can continue to be passed on to further generations and write further successful chapters.
