In modern laboratories and research facilities, exact precision forms the foundation of every finding. But behind every successful experiment in hectic everyday laboratory work there is also a duty of care for the safety of laboratory staff. If you work with sensitive substances and aggressive chemicals every day, professional laboratory clothing is indispensable. At Karlowsky, we develop laboratory workwear that meets precisely these high demands of everyday working life. Our collection combines uncompromising protection with excellent wearing comfort and a modern design that looks good at work.
All-round protection in the laboratory: a wide selection and safe footwear
Karlowsky offers a large and varied selection of professional laboratory protective clothing that is tailored specifically to the high demands of laboratories and modern working life. The extensive range includes the classic lab coat and overcoat for women and men in various lengths as well as ergonomic tunics, light jackets, shirts, T-shirts and robust trousers, which form the perfect basic equipment for daily changes at work.
In addition, suitable footwear also plays a decisive role in a safe and comfortable working day in the laboratory. High-quality work shoes and special safety shoes complete the protective equipment by providing optimal grip on smooth laboratory floors and protecting against falling objects or liquid splashes. Slip-resistant soles, an ergonomic footbed for standing for long periods and easy-care, disinfectable uppers ensure that laboratory staff can move ergonomically and safely even during intensive tasks.
High material quality in the laboratory
For its laboratory clothing, Karlowsky relies on high-quality cotton that meets the demands of everyday working life. The textiles impress with hard-wearing, skin-friendly and easy-care properties that retain their shape and function even with frequent washing and intensive use in the laboratory.
Certifications and tests in our range
Various certifications and tests are available for selected products in our range. These include, among others, the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), the Grüner Knopf (Green Button) and OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. The certifications and tests mentioned do not apply equally to all products in our range, but always only to the specific item. You can see which certifications apply to an item directly on the respective product page.
Sectors and areas of use for laboratory protective clothing
The high-quality laboratory workwear from Karlowsky has a flexible design and is precisely tailored to the specific conditions of a wide range of disciplines. Here is an overview of the most important areas of use and their particular features:
- Medical and clinical laboratories: in hospitals, medical practices and diagnostic centres, the focus is on hygiene. Here the clothing supports strict hygiene regulations and can easily be cleaned at high temperatures.
- Chemical and pharmaceutical industry: in the development and testing of medicines or chemicals, work is carried out with care and concentration. Robust materials and closed fits are particularly in demand here.
- Research and biotechnology: at universities, institutes and in modern research, people work with full concentration for hours on end. Here, ergonomic cuts and breathable fabrics provide the necessary feel-good factor during long laboratory shifts.
- Food analysis and quality assurance: extremely strict hygiene and quality standards apply in the food industry. The clothing must stay spotlessly clean, prevent contamination of samples and at the same time convey a clean, professional impression.
- Training and educational institutions: in schools, universities and training companies where future specialists learn how to handle laboratory equipment, solid basic equipment also ensures an optimal and safe start to working life.
Well-thought-out details and clever pocket solutions for everyday laboratory work
The functionality of Karlowsky laboratory clothing is particularly evident in the fine details that make everyday work in the laboratory noticeably easier. Well-thought-out pockets offer sufficient storage space for important work utensils such as pens, notepads, smartphones or keys, so that everything important is always to hand. Spacious side pockets, patch chest pockets or special inside pockets are positioned so that they do not get in the way when moving. In addition, concealed button plackets, nickel-free press studs for quick dressing and undressing and practical loops for attaching ID badges or tools ensure that comfort and the highest safety standards go perfectly hand in hand.
Care and hard-wearing properties: resistant laboratory protective clothing
The laboratory clothing is designed to effortlessly withstand the extreme stresses of daily use and the strict hygiene requirements at work. Thanks to high-quality, hard-wearing fabrics, coats, tunics and trousers retain their shape, colour and protective function even after numerous wash cycles. The textiles are specially designed for professional industrial laundering or regular washing at high temperatures as well as disinfection wash cycles. This not only ensures spotless cleanliness, but also makes the protective clothing resilient equipment for every workplace.

Frequently asked questions about laboratory clothing
Do you have to wear long trousers in the laboratory?
Yes, long trousers are compulsory in most laboratories as soon as you work with chemicals or biological substances. This follows from the employer’s risk assessment: as soon as there is a risk from splashes or hot substances, the skin under the lab coat must be protected. The robust trousers in the Karlowsky range are designed precisely for this daily use and also withstand frequent washing.
Are shorts allowed in the laboratory?
No, shorts are generally not allowed in everyday laboratory work, as soon as contact with chemicals or splashes is possible. Otherwise the uncovered skin would be unprotected, which is why the lab coat and long trousers are a fixed part of the workwear.
Which shoes in the laboratory?
Only sturdy, closed and slip-resistant footwear is permitted, which is mandatory in every laboratory under TRGS 526. This rules out open sandals, clogs without heel straps or mules, as they protect neither against falling objects nor against liquid splashes. Slip-resistant soles and an ergonomic footbed for long shifts offer real added value here, as also provided by Karlowsky’s work and safety shoes.
Which protective equipment is mandatory in the laboratory?
The basic equipment under TRGS 526 includes a long lab coat with close-fitting sleeves, safety goggles worn at all times and suitable gloves for the hazardous substance in question. Depending on the risk assessment, further items are added, such as protective suits for particularly aggressive chemicals, which the employer must specify and provide as binding. Karlowsky covers the textile part of this equipment, from the classic lab coat to tunics and trousers that fit seamlessly into the prescribed protective equipment.
